Supporting Democratic Candidates in Arizona
Founded in 2018, Swing Left Maricopa County works to connect activists in Arizona and throughout the country to the campaigns and political actions that will have the most impact in electing Democrats at every level.
In 2020 we were successful delivering 11 electoral votes for President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris, re-electing Jennifer Pawlik to the State Legislature in AD 17; electing Judy Schwiebert in LD 20; and electing Christine Marsh to the Senate in LD 28. Arizona voters also passed a statewide school funding measure that will generate desperately needed funds to public schools. Many of the school bond and school override measures also passed. And Anna Tovar will join Democrat Sandra Kennedy on the five-member statewide Arizona Corporations Commission. There is a lot to celebrate.
We hoped to have more to celebrate. Sadly, our efforts to flip both houses of the State Capitol fell short. As did our effort to flip the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and pick up additional county-wide elective offices. Notwithstanding these electoral disappointments, Maricopa County Democrats fielded a slate of exceptional candidates who ran disciplined, meaningful and well-funded campaigns, with talented and dedicated staff and volunteers. Honor is found not only in victory.
And so our work continues. Because we still need a state legislature that puts the interests of families and communities ahead of party loyalty and fringe ideology. We need representatives who respect the rule of law and honor our democracy with clarity of purpose and principled action.
But before the midterm election in 2022, there will be redistricting. Each Congressional and state legislative district will be redrawn. So before we turn our attention to the 2022 mid-terms, Swing Left Maricopa County is shifting gears to provide our Swing Left members and State allies information on the process and to support public input into the redistricting process here in Arizona.
